Locating Dhofar
Occupying the southern third of Oman, Dhofar is easily accessed by road and air from nearby cities. The capital, Salalah, is regularly serviced by air from Muscat (a 1 hour flight) and neighbouring Gulf cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai (less than 2 hours away). During peak season between June and September, the number of flights increases dramatically from Muscat and neighbouring UAE with services into Salalah International Airport.
By road, the journey from Muscat to Salalah takes approximately 12 hours. It is best divided into several days to allow adequate time to stop at the many sights along the way.
Enchanting Scenery
Beautiful landscapes covered with grass and wetlands create a stunning contrast to the neighbouring deserts in southern Dhofar. During the monsoon (khareef) season, nature reserves teem with bird and animal life in scenes more reminiscent of an African game park than those typically associated with an Arabian country. A favourite place to witness such a spectacle is Wadi Dirbat, a short scenic drive from Salalah. More...
Captivating history
Dhofar is steeped in history dating back almost 2500 years. From the incredible archaeological site of Sumhuram at Khor Rori to the more recent Taqah Castle, visitors will be overwhelmed with opportunities to immerse themselves in tales of sultans and sailors, spice trading and ancient metal-making. Amazing Culture
Salalah, Dhofar's capital, possesses its own unique brand of Omani culture. Immediately obvious will be the African influence, a legacy of Oman's long trade ties with the region and its colonisation of Zanzibar circa AD1700. In fact, with a culture built around centuries of trade with distant nations, the trademark hospitality for which Omanis are famous can be found in its greatest form in Salalah.
